# Mobile app design

[Free consultation](https://wzor.biz/en/free-consultation/) [Projects](https://wzor.biz/en/projects/)

We design iOS and Android together - flows, wireframes for every screen and a clickable prototype you walk through on a phone rather than watch on a slide. The handover carries a component library aligned with the conventions of both platforms, an edge-state specification and assets prepared to the requirements of the stores.

We have worked with leading companies and startups

Challenges

## When it pays to start with design, not code

An app is the most expensive product type to fix after launch - every change needs a new release and store approval. Here are four moments where design saves the most.

- „Before you commission development”

A development team will quote what you describe - and a written description is never as unambiguous as it feels while writing it. A clickable prototype turns a debate about imagined products into a conversation about specific screens.

- „Installs happen, activation does not”

A download costs money, and a user who does not reach the first bit of value within a minute does not come back. We redesign onboarding and the first session, because that is where most people drop out.

- „Navigation where nothing fits in the menu any more”

Every release added a screen until the structure stopped matching what people actually open the app for. We fix the architecture before you add another feature.

- „Android after iOS, or the other way round”

Porting screens one to one looks like a saving and ends with an app that feels foreign on the second platform. We design the differences where they matter, and only there.

Who it is for

## Who we design mobile apps for

- ### Large service companies with a customer app

The app is one channel next to the call centre and the web account, and each of them was built separately and says something different today. You have to reconcile what the service department requires with what a user wants to finish in two minutes on a train platform.

- ### SaaS teams moving onto the phone

The browser product works and has customers, so moving it to a smaller screen looks like the natural next step. Only a fraction of the features fit on a phone, and deciding which fraction weighs more than the rest of the project.

- ### Software houses without a designer on the team

The team has delivery capacity and a client who expects finished UX, while hiring a designer takes longer than the project itself. We come in as the design layer inside their process - in their sprint rhythm and their tools.

- ### Companies with an app for field staff

Technicians, drivers and crews work in gloves, in noise and in places with no signal, while the app was modelled on an office system. What counts is the number of taps it takes to close a job, and what happens to the data when the network comes back.

Our difference

## What we do differently on apps

- ### Reviews are held on a phone

We look at every version on a physical device, not as a frame on a monitor. A screen that reads calmly at twenty-seven inches can be unusable at six inches, in sunlight, with one hand.

- ### Store guidelines are checked on wireframes

The App Store Review Guidelines and Google Play policies apply to design as well - consent, the sign-in screen, account deletion, the way payments are taken. We verify them before the screens reach code, because a rejected review costs a whole release.

- ### Flows are tested against the team that will build them

Before the interface stage we sit down with your developers over the flow map and the scope of the first version. A screen nobody can estimate then surfaces on a wireframe rather than two sprints later.

- ### Activation events are defined alongside the flows

The path map comes with a list of events to wire into analytics and a definition of the moment a user reaches first value. After launch you can see which step people drop out at, instead of inferring it from store ratings.

Process

## How we run it

1. Week 1

    ### Workshop and scope

Who the user is, what job they are doing and what genuinely belongs in a first version. We come out with a feature list split into what ships now and what waits.

2. Week 1–3

    ### Flows and wireframes

User paths and screen layouts in low fidelity. This is where the decisions that are most expensive to reverse in code get made, so this is where we spend the most conversation.

3. Week 3–6

    ### Interface and prototype

Full UI for the key screens and a clickable prototype you can walk through on a phone. Not a video and not slides - a working flow.

4. Week 5–8

    ### States and edge cases

Offline, network errors, empty lists, permissions, notifications, accessibility. This is the part of the scope whose absence only surfaces in testing and always costs a release.

5. Week 8–10

    ### Handover to development

Behaviour specification, component library, Dev Mode, assets and a handover session. We stay reachable while it is coded, because that is when the questions appear.

Deliverables

## What you get at the end

- ### Flow map

User paths from install to goal, with branches and exit points. The document your development team quotes from.

- ### Wireframes for every screen

Not the key three. Every screen the app actually has, on both platforms wherever they differ.

- ### Clickable prototype

A flow you can walk through on a phone - for user testing, for showing the board and for investor conversations if those are on the plan.

- ### Component library

Components with variants and states plus tokens, aligned with iOS and Android conventions. The next feature gets built from it rather than from scratch.

- ### Edge-state specification

Offline, errors, empty lists, permissions, notifications, loading. Written down, because these are what store ratings are made of.

- ### Store assets

The icon at every required size, a launch screen and store screenshots for App Store and Google Play, prepared to their guidelines.

Toolkit

## What we use

An app is fixed by shipping a release, and a release goes through store review, so some of these rules are not a matter of taste. Below is the set that holds in every project, whatever the scope.

![A workbench from above: two printed interface layouts, a magnifier enlarging one block, a steel ruler and a greyscale step wedge running from white to black, with one line underlined in orange marker](https://wzor.biz/_astro/warsztat-lupa-linijka-skala-szarosci.C5DINzRJ_Z2n7L7C.webp)

- Apple Human Interface Guidelines for iOS, Material Design for Android
- Touch targets no smaller than 44 pt on iOS and 48 dp on Android
- Text contrast 4.5:1, icons and controls 3:1
- System font scaling all the way to the largest accessibility setting
- The no-signal state and the sync rule designed alongside the screen
- A permission request preceded by a screen that explains the reason
- An account deletion path reachable from inside the app
- Icon, launch screen and screenshots at the sizes both stores require

Outcomes

## What these timelines rest on

- 3 weeks

how long the EzzyGuide app UX and UI took - 30+ wireframes and a clickable prototype, with a two-person team

- 4 weeks

how long the Fonia cashback app design took - 60+ wireframes, with a three-person team

- 5 people

that many users in a prototype test surface most usability problems (Jakob Nielsen's rule, Nielsen Norman Group) - which is why we test before code, not after release

The timelines come from two of our own projects - EzzyGuide and Fonia; both are written up as case studies on this site, so you can hold the range in the quote section against them. The five-user rule is a public finding from Nielsen Norman Group, not a statistic of ours. We do not publish post-launch store results - we go through them from named engagements during a consultation; some projects are covered by NDA.

Client voices

## What our clients say

- > „Working with the Wzór team was a genuinely great experience! They always answered our questions quickly and were flexible about our comments. They have no shortage of creative ideas and are at the same time thoroughly reliable and on time. The end result fully met our expectations; we recommend them to anyone looking for professionals who care.”

![](https://wzor.biz/_astro/opinia.BrbzyDCf_1rSYiY.webp)Maja Wieloch-Silecka Operations Director, Bosfor Group

- > „Our clients expect us to act fast and effectively across a very wide scope - from building a brand, through a website with a store, to running an effective sales campaign. Not an easy task, but doable when you have a tight-knit team and partners who take on challenges on the fly. For us, quality, accountability and commitment are key, and working with UX Agency Wzór gives us that 100%.”

![](https://wzor.biz/_astro/piotr-alberski.B09Ae7iY_Z19yEFs.webp)Piotr Alberski Chief Operating Officer, Agencja XO Media

- > „Our cooperation with UX Agency Wzór started with our own website. We really liked the way they work, so we decided to subcontract projects for our clients to them on a White Label basis. We loved their workflow, the way they hand projects over to our team, their documentation and their work on the design system. Now we can take on bigger risks.”

Time and scope

## How long it takes and what shapes the quote

8–10 weeks

From workshop to handover to the development team. Development itself is separate time and separate budget - if you do not have a team, we help you pick one.

- Number of screens and features in the first version

- One platform or both

- Scope of user testing on the prototype

- Integrations - payments, sign-in, maps, external systems

- Whether an identity and component library already exist

- Accessibility and regulatory requirements

FAQ

## Questions that come up most often

What does mobile app design cost?

We keep the entry threshold public, and quote the figure for your specific app only after scoping - a first version can mean fifteen screens or sixty, and those are different projects at different figures. The quote depends on the number of screens, whether we design one platform or both, the scope of user testing and the number of integrations. We send a concrete figure within two business days of your enquiry.

Does the quote include building the app?

No. We quote the design - research, flows, wireframes, interface, prototype and handover. Development is a separate budget and a separate timeline, usually a multiple of the design cost. We say so upfront, because conflating the two is the most common source of mismatched expectations.

Do you design iOS and Android separately?

We design one product and differentiate it where the platform conventions genuinely diverge - navigation, gestures, system typography, form patterns. Copying screens one to one looks like a saving and ends with an app that feels foreign on the second platform.

What exactly does "clickable prototype" mean?

A working flow you walk through with your finger on your own phone - not a video and not slides. It does three jobs: user testing before code, showing decision-makers how the product actually behaves, and giving a development team something unambiguous to quote from.

Do you test the design with users?

Yes, on the prototype and before code - the cheapest moment to discover that a path is unclear. We agree the scope of testing together, because it is one of the items that moves the quote most. If the budget is tight, we say which decisions are worth testing and which can be made without research.

Will you help us find a team to build it?

Yes. We do not build mobile apps ourselves, but we hand over the design in a format that can be quoted and coded from, and we help you compare development teams. We stay reachable during the build, because that is exactly when questions about the design appear.

Who owns the rights to the design?

You do. Economic copyright to the design transfers under the contract, along with the source files. We do not use time-limited licences or make ownership conditional on continued work with us.

Do you sign NDAs?

Yes, as standard - with pre-launch apps it is the rule rather than the exception. We can sign your template or send ours before the first substantive conversation.

We already have an app. Can it be improved in stages, without a rewrite?

It can, and that is usually how we do it. We start with the path where you lose the most people - most often onboarding - and design that first, so the effect shows before the whole project ends. If you would rather begin by diagnosing where the problem sits, we run [UX audits](https://wzor.biz/en/services/audyty-ux/) as a separate service.
